Since 1992 commercial truck drivers have been required to have special licensing to drive these large semi-trailers. In Tennessee a commercial drivers license is needed for anyone operating a:

• vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more
• any combination vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds, or if the trailer weighs more than 10,001
• any vehicle designed to transport more than 15 passengers in addition to the driver
• any size vehicle which requires hazardous material place cards

Operators of such vehicles may have a Class A, B, or C license depending on the weight of the vehicle and the materials being transported. Testing can vary on the type of vehicle being driven and oftentimes a skills test is required in order for an individual to retain their commercial drivers license (CDL).
