Why Pyrex Glassware Products Shatter

Since 1919, Pyrex products have been advertised as one of the first cookware brands that could withstand rapid changes from high to low temperatures. This made Pyrex products ideal for cooking and baking, and was often advertised as “oven to ice-box” or “ice-box to oven” cookware.

When glass is rapidly exposed to different temperatures, it can undergo “thermal shock,” which is stress produced in a material as a result of undergoing a sudden change in temperature.

When a Pyrex glassware product is suddenly heated or cooled, different parts of the glassware contract or expand by different amounts, causing stress. If the stress becomes too much for the glass to handle, the product’s structure will fail, causing it to shatter or explode.

Are Pyrex Glassware Products Defective?

Pyrex originally used borosilicate glass to manufacture its glass cookware products. Borosilicate glass is an engineered type of glass commonly used to make laboratory equipment and is known for its strength and durability to withstand rapid temperature change.

Borosilicate glass’s resistance to extreme temperatures made it an ideal material to use for cookware that could be transferred from an oven to a stove top. However, in 1998, Corelle Brands, Pyrex Glassware’s parent company, stopped using borosilicate glass to manufacture Pyrex products.

Instead, Pyrex began to be manufacture its glass cookware with soda-lime glass. This naturally occurring glass is not thermal shock-resistant and is much weaker than borosilicate glass. As a result, Pyrex Glassware products are at risk of shattering, breaking or exploding if they are subjected to stress resulting from extreme changes in temperature.

Furthermore, Pyrex did not inform consumers that it began manufacturing its products with a different type of glass that could not withstand rapid changes in temperature. This put many consumers at risk of suffering serious injuries as a result of a defective product.

Filing a Pyrex Lawsuit

Manufacturers have an obligation to ensure their products are safe and will not harm consumers when a product is used as it was intended to be used. When a defective product causes a consumer to suffer an injury or death, the manufacturer can be held liable for the resulting damages.

If you or someone you love has been injured by a defective Pyrex glassware product that shattered or exploded, you may be entitled to file a Pyrex lawsuit against the product’s manufacturer.

To determine if you may be entitled to file a Pyrex lawsuit, our attorneys will examine several aspects of your claim and the manner in which you suffered your injury. This includes reviewing your claim to find out if the following elements were present at the time of your accident:

Additionally, you should be able to show the product’s defect was not obvious, and that a reasonable consumer would not have known it was dangerous.
  • The product’s defect directly caused your injury: For your Pyrex lawsuit to be valid, you must prove your injury can directly be linked to the product’s defect.
