DePuy Hip Replacement Recalls
One out of eight patients who received a DePuy hip replacement needed to have a subsequent surgery to repair or replace the device within five years. The DePuy ASR Hip Replacement system was recalled because pieces of the system were known to come loose.
DePuy Orthopedics gave the following statement with regard to the hip replacement recall:
"Data recently received by the company shows that more people than expected who received the ASR Hip System experienced pain and other symptoms that led to a second hip replacement surgery, called a revision surgery. For this reason, DePuy Orthopedics is voluntarily recalling its ASR XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System. This recall means additional testing and treatment may be necessary to ensure the hip is functioning well. In some cases, patients may need additional surgery."
Defective Depuy Hip Replacement Side Effects
Loose components of a defective DePuy hip replacement system have been known to cause the following:
- Depositing of metal fragments in the bloodstream
- Bone fracture
- Dislocation
- Infection
- Metal sensitivity
- Popping and grinding
- Pain
High metal ion levels in the bloodstream can cause pseudotumors, which are often life-threatening.
