Commercial Truck Drivers License

Truck on highwayCommercial Drivers Licenses were created for operators of larger and more complex vehicles to assist them in learning how to operate these vehicles safely.  In Tennessee, a CDL can include Class A, B, and C depending on what the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, Gross Combination Weight Rating, and what is being transported by the vehicle.

According to the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the state law has defined a commercial motor vehicle as any automobile that weighs over 26,000 pounds. Furthermore, if hazardous materials are being transported, or if the vehicle is designed to transport over 15 passengers including the driver, a Commercial Drivers License is required.

If you or a loved one has become injured following a truck accident, our truck accident attorneys believe that it is the responsibility of these negligent injury causing individuals to pay for the injuries and damages they have caused. Our attorneys will seek the maximum compensation benefits for each individual case and work relentlessly to obtain justice in the court of law.

While determining the class of the CDL required for you to operate your specific type of vehicle, it is necessary for you to recognize what types of items you will be transporting. Typically, commercial licenses include Class A, B, and C depending on the GVWR and GCWR, along with what is being transported.

The common endorsements in Tennessee include:

  • H - Hazardous Materials

This endorsement is required if the commercial motor vehicle is transporting hazardous materials, as well as being required under the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act.

  • N Cargo Tanker

This endorsement is required if the vehicle is designed to transport liquids and gasses with a tank designed to carry 1,000 gallons or more.

  • X Haz Mat & Tanker

This endorsement is required to operate a tanker transporting hazardous materials

  • P Passenger

This endorsement is required for vehicles designed to transport over 16 passengers including the driver.

This endorsement includes Class A only and is intended for vehicles authorized to pull over one trailer.

  • S School Bus

This endorsement is required for school busses which are designed to pick-up and drop off children on public roadways. In addition, those who transport children on field trips also need the S endorsement.

These licenses are all intended to keep individuals safe while driving on our roadways, and also keep others traveling in the vehicle and others on the road safe.
